Trump Proposes a Surprising Move: Gianni Infantino Should Lead the UN

Donald Trump, the president of the United States, aspires for Gianni Infantino, currently at the helm of FIFA, to take on the role of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The news was published by the New York Post, citing sources who claim that Trump views Infantino as a figure with global authority and a talent for building consensus among people.

The report also emphasizes that the senior American official is convinced the FIFA president enjoys worldwide respect and possesses a rare ability to bring parties together. However, it remains unclear whether Infantino himself has any interest in the position or if the topic has been discussed between them.

The successor to Antonio Guterres, whose term expires at the end of December, is expected to be chosen within this year. The process requires that initially the 15 members of the Security Council give the green light to a candidacy, and then it must also receive the blessing of the General Assembly.

In the New York Post article, Infantino’s name is circulating among several alternatives for the post. Also in the race is Michelle Bachelet, the former president of Chile, who may have to face a U.S. veto, as well as Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, for whom the article notes that the United Kingdom might express reservations due to the Falklands issue.

If Infantino manages to be elected to this position, relations between the Trump administration and the UN could see an improvement, the report further states. It is recalled that Trump has often held a critical stance toward the organization, labeling it as not sufficiently efficient in resolving global crises.
