Trump continues to defend Russian oil and turns against the EU: The bloc gave Moscow 250 billion dollars

The scheme promoted by US President Donald Trump for importing Russian diesel fuel continues to spark waves of indignation in Ukraine and across the European continent, while the US leader himself remains unwavering in the face of objections. Brussels, for its part, has made clear that punitive measures against Moscow will not be extinguished.

Through a post on Truth Social, the American president has launched harsh attacks against the European Union, claiming that the bloc has handed Russia 250 billion dollars for energy alone.

Defending his position, Trump declared that the European Union has paid Russia 250 billion dollars for energy, but that no so-called “fake news” outlet dares to touch this topic, while emphasizing that he has acted first and foremost in the interest of American citizens.

In Friday’s statement, the American president indicated that Putin agreed to an immediate shipment of 300 thousand tons of diesel fuel, destined for American consumption and other markets.

According to the scheme unveiled by Washington, an additional 500 thousand tons would follow in November, with another million tons to come after. Trump turned this decision into a tool to ease fuel prices in America, which have risen under the influence of strong tensions in global energy markets.

Regardless of the reasoning given, the understanding is raising questions about the future of the West’s sanction policy toward Moscow, which has not stopped its war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has categorically rejected this agreement, convinced that the extra dollars Russia would earn from energy would go directly toward fueling the war.

In Kyiv there are concerns that an easing of restrictions on Russian fuel exports would give the Kremlin the opportunity to fill its coffers, precisely when Kyiv is calling on Western partners to tighten the economic and military noose around Russia.

The European Union’s Foreign Ministers have once again noted that the sanctions regime against Russia remains in force, despite the Trump-Putin understanding.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, has reiterated that without greater pressure on Moscow, there can be no talk of an end to the war. Other European figures have also voiced criticism, casting doubt on whether this step will bring any real relief in energy prices or whether it will damage transatlantic unity.

The controversy over diesel fuel is crystallizing into a new source of tension between Washington and its European allies, at a time when the war in Ukraine and energy turmoil continue to exert influence over international markets.
