Trump at NATO closed-door summit: US will remain in the Alliance, contents of speech and final declaration revealed

Donald Trump told NATO allies that the United States will continue to be part of the Atlantic Alliance, providing assurances over the continuity of Washington’s commitment.

According to sources cited by Reuters, this message was delivered during the closed-door meeting of leaders at the NATO summit in Ankara.

One of the sources said the US president addressed his counterparts with the words: “We want to stay with you”, in an effort to reassure allies about the future of the US role in the alliance.

During the summit, Trump also said that the US is ready to continue supplying weapons to allied countries. According to the sources, he did not announce the end of the temporary ceasefire agreement with Iran, nor did he touch on the issue of Greenland, a topic that had previously caused tensions between the US and some NATO member states.

At the close of the North Atlantic Council meeting, the US president spoke again and, according to an allied source cited by ANSA, said he had been “very impressed” by the statements of NATO leaders.

Trump is also said to have stated: “I felt the love in this room”, adding that he would have preferred the media to have been present as well to see the atmosphere of the meeting.

In the summit’s final declaration, NATO heads of state and government announced that more than $50 billion in new defence contracts had been approved.

The leaders also pledged to increase joint military production capacities and to work more closely with the defence industry, with the aim of accelerating technological innovation.

The final document also underlines that allies will continue efforts to remove trade barriers in the defence sector among member countries, as well as to strengthen industrial partnerships within the NATO framework.

In the final declaration, the leaders of the Atlantic Alliance reaffirmed their full commitment to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack on one member country is considered an attack on the entire alliance.

“An attack against one is an attack against all. Our unity, solidarity and collective strength remain the foundation of peace, security and prosperity for around one billion citizens of NATO countries”, the final declaration states.

The leaders also reiterated that the alliance will continue to pursue a full 360-degree approach to strengthening deterrence and defence capabilities in the face of new global security challenges.
