NATO Summit in Turkey/Erdogan Holds Bilateral Meetings With Heads of State, Trump: The Ceasefire With Tehran Is Over

Ankara has since yesterday become the center of international diplomacy, hosting the leaders of NATO’s 32 member states at the North Atlantic Alliance summit. • The discussions are focused on global security, the war in Ukraine, strengthening collective defense, and new financial commitments by allied countries. • One of the main issues is also expected to be the aid package of around 70 billion euros, which European allies are expected to formalize in order to guarantee support for Kyiv over the next two years. • US President Donald Trump, during a joint conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, sharply criticized Spain, describing its stance toward the Alliance as problematic. • Another issue raised by the US president was Greenland, which Trump said has strategic importance for the security of the United States and the world. • According to him, control over Greenland is important for global defense, and he criticized Denmark’s position on the issue. • The US president also expressed dissatisfaction with NATO, saying the Alliance had not provided the necessary support to the United States in confronting Iran. • He thanked Secretary General Mark Rutte for leading NATO, but said he was disappointed by the stance of some member countries. • During the meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump declared that his relationship with the Turkish leader had been one of the reasons he took part in the summit. • He did not rule out the possibility of further changes to the US military presence in Europe and criticized some allied countries over their level of support for American policies. • One of the most important meetings of the summit is expected to be the one between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to hold bilateral meetings during the day with several of the leaders participating in the summit.
