Tragic Heat Wave Toll in France: 5,764 Deaths Above Average, the Most Alarming Figures Since 2003

France has recorded an increase of over 5,700 deaths compared to the expected average during the June heat wave, marking the heaviest toll since the 2003 disaster.

The preliminary data were released by the French health agency, Santé publique France.

The report reveals that between June 17 and July 2, 5,764 excess deaths were counted, with nearly half concentrated in a very short period, specifically on June 25-27. Officials clarify that these figures include deaths from all causes and cannot yet be definitively linked solely to high temperatures, even though the impact of this heat wave is assessed as extremely large.

Excess mortality was observed in all age groups over 15 years, with the most severe consequences among those over 45. Of the total excess deaths, 3,719 belong to citizens aged 75 and above, reconfirming that the elderly are the most vulnerable group. Similarly, in the 45-64 age group, 979 more fatalities were recorded, a 55% increase above normal expectations.

Institutions report that 98.5% of the French population was hit by extreme temperatures, as the heat wave covered 92 administrative units. The most critical situation was experienced in the Paris region (Île-de-France), where 1,999 excess deaths were documented, a figure almost double the expected.

These preliminary figures have ignited a political debate in France, with the opposition blaming the government for lack of preparedness against the challenges of extreme temperatures. On the other hand, health representatives underline that this year’s heat wave was atypical due to its early onset, duration, and spread across almost the entire French territory.

Specialists warn that prolonged exposure to such high temperatures significantly increases the risk for the most fragile groups, such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic diseases.
