Heatwave in France Marks Worst Toll Since 2003 with 5,764 Excess Deaths

France has recorded over 5,700 excess deaths during the scorching heat of June, representing the largest tragedy since the heat crisis that struck the country in 2003.

These initial figures were released by the French health agency, Santé publique France.

According to the document, the period from June 17 to July 2 resulted in 5,764 additional fatalities, with nearly half concentrated in the three days between June 25 and 27. Officials clarify that these are deaths from all causes and cannot yet be officially linked solely to high temperatures, but they emphasize that the role of the heatwave is seen as an extraordinarily significant factor.

The rise in fatalities was felt across all age groups above 15, but the hardest hit were individuals over 45. Of the total 5,764 excess cases, 3,719 belong to people aged 75 and older, reconfirming that the elderly constitute the most affected category. In parallel, the 45 to 64 age group recorded 979 deaths above normal rates, which translates to a 55% increase.

Institutions highlight that 98.5% of the French population faced extreme temperatures, as the phenomenon encompassed 92 administrative units. The most alarming situation was recorded in the Paris region (Île-de-France), where 1,999 excess fatalities were observed, a figure nearly double the normal parameters.

These preliminary records have sparked intense discussions on the political scene, with the opposition blaming the government for insufficient engagement in facing such situations. On the other hand, public health specialists point out that this year’s heatwave was unique due to its early onset, duration, and almost total coverage of French territory.

Specialists warn that prolonged exposure to high temperatures significantly increases the threat for the most vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, minors, and people suffering from serious illnesses.
