Tragedy in the US/ Lindsay Clancy returns to court after trial ends without verdict over deaths of three children

Lindsay Clancy, 36, appeared in court for the first time after the trial over the deaths of her three children ended without a verdict.

She appeared on Tuesday, September 29, at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts, where a procedural hearing was held. During the hearing, prosecutors are expected to announce whether they will seek a second trial.

At the start of the hearing, Judge William Sullivan greeted Clancy, who replied, “Good morning.”

Clancy faces charges of murdering her three children: Coras, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, just 8 months old. All three children died in January 2023.

She denies the charges and has pleaded not guilty. According to the defense, Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident and could not be considered criminally responsible for her actions.

After the incident, the 36-year-old attempted to end her life by jumping from a second-floor window. As a result, she suffered serious injuries and was left paralyzed from the waist down.

The first trial lasted five weeks and ended on September 4, when the judge declared a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The jury had deliberated for seven days.

Prosecutors argued that Clancy knowingly killed the children and that, at the time of the crime, she was capable of distinguishing right from wrong.

Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, has asked that his client not face a second trial. He argues that a new trial would violate the principle prohibiting a person from being tried twice for the same offense.

The defense has also asked the judge to acquit Clancy, stressing that the prosecution has not presented sufficient evidence to prove her criminal responsibility.

Clancy is currently being held under suicide watch at a state psychiatric hospital.
