Tragedy in Malisheva, Burjani Calls for Stricter Criteria for Gun Permits: Family Conflicts Are Resolved Through Communication

Malisheva has once again been shaken by a tragic incident in which a woman lost her life after being shot with a firearm. Her husband is suspected in the case, while according to reports, the weapon used was legally licensed.

The incident has revived the debate over gun ownership and the need for stronger preventive measures, especially in families where spouses face conflicts or ongoing problems.

Jurist Blerim Burjani told “Bota sot” that the procedures for obtaining gun permits should be made stricter. According to him, problems within a family are not resolved with weapons, but through dialogue and professional help from psychologists.

Burjani also assessed that raising social awareness and strengthening the Centers for Social Work are important steps in preventing such cases.

He stressed that combating domestic violence cannot rely solely on the police, law enforcement institutions and harsher punishments. According to him, the professional treatment of couples and the development of healthy communication between them should also play an important role.

“Family problems are not resolved through weapons, but through conversation and with the help of a psychologist. For this reason, alongside institutional strengthening, greater social awareness and stronger Centers for Social Work are also needed,” Burjani said.

The jurist underlined that many couples in Kosovo have failed to establish mutual understanding and normal communication. He added that the intervention of psychologists could help preserve marriages and prevent violence within the family.

“The work of law enforcement bodies or increased penalties alone is not enough. A higher level of awareness is needed, while couples must have healthy communication and receive treatment from psychologists when they face problems,” he said.

Burjani called on institutions to pay particular attention to young couples and invest more in preventing family conflicts, instead of intervening only after the situation has escalated.

“No state can resolve conflicts between spouses solely through punitive measures. The solution must involve psychologists and education on building healthy marital relationships,” Burjani declared.

He said that young couples should be included in treatment programs provided by the relevant institutions. According to him, more than 1,400 divorces were registered during the first six months of this year, making the current situation and the number of divorces indicators of the need for concrete institutional measures.
