Tragedy during a dive in Italy: 29-year-old director dies after being struck by the propellers of an inflatable boat

A tragic accident has been recorded off the coast of Lampedusa, where a 29-year-old man died after being struck by the propellers of a tourist inflatable boat while diving in the sea.

The victim was Cristiano Giamporcaro, a film director and the son of Maria Castiglione, who had served as a city councilor in Caltanissetta.

Preliminary information indicates that Giamporcaro had gone into the sea near Punta Sottile accompanied by a woman. It is suspected that the two had planned to dive, but she returned to shore immediately after entering the water.

While the 29-year-old remained in the sea, he signaled his presence by waving a handkerchief. Shortly afterward, he was struck by the propellers of an inflatable boat carrying two tourists.

Investigations to clarify the full circumstances of the accident are ongoing. Initial information indicates that contact with the vessel’s propellers caused the young man extremely serious injuries.

A Coast Guard unit recovered his body from the water, assisted by a private vessel specialized in this type of operation.

According to initial reports, Giamporcaro may have died as a result of massive blood loss. It is suspected that the propellers had almost completely severed one of his arms, while the definitive cause of death is expected to be determined only through an autopsy.
