Tim Cook Ends 15-Year Tenure as Apple CEO: Historic Successes and Challenges John Ternus Inherits

Tim Cook steps down from Apple’s leadership after 15 years, handing the role to John Ternus. His successor takes over one of the most powerful companies in the world, but at the same time faces several decisive issues for its future.

Cook was named Apple CEO in August 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs, one of the most influential figures in technology history. Unlike Jobs, he based his leadership model on managerial skills, expansion of the services sector, and consolidation of the global supply chain.

Under his leadership, Apple’s stock value rose by more than 2,000%. In July, the company briefly touched a market capitalization of $5 trillion, ranking as the second company to reach that figure.

Among Cook’s major successes is credited the transformation of the iPhone into an inseparable part of daily life. During his tenure, Apple’s ecosystem expanded significantly, encompassing payments, shopping, music, fitness, and the use of a wide range of services.

David Yoffie, a professor at Harvard Business School and a researcher on Apple and Cook’s leadership style, said that he “managed to take the iPhone to a level that no one would have thought possible during that period.”

However, Cook’s record is not limited to product development. He played an important role in managing the complex political and economic relationships between the United States and China, which are two key markets for Apple.

Before taking on the CEO role, Cook had built extensive experience in operations and supply chain management. Experts believe that his careful approach, speed in decision-making, and negotiating skill enabled Apple to keep iPhone supply functional even during crises and geopolitical tensions.

Ron Johnson, head of Apple’s retail operations from 2000 to 2011, described Cook as an “intelligent” and “strategic” leader.

“He was probably the most cautious of the executive team members. He always listened first and spoke when he had something to add,” Johnson stated.

Another test for Cook was his relationship with the Trump administration, which he managed. To avoid high tariffs, Apple pledged to invest $600 billion in expanding its activities in the US, including domestic production of some critical iPhone components.

In parallel, Cook steered the company toward distributing production outside China as well, without severing ties with the Chinese market and leaders. However, US tariffs and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted that Apple’s dependence on China remains a major concern.

This issue will be part of the challenges that fall to John Ternus, who takes the helm of Apple on September 1.

Ternus will also have to handle pressure from regulatory authorities in Europe. Due to European Union requirements, Apple has been forced to change the way the App Store operates, while the new version of Siri is not expected to launch in Europe because of EU rules.

However, artificial intelligence could pose the biggest hurdle for the new leader. Apple is coming under increasing pressure to accelerate the development of AI technologies and to close the gap with competitors. At the same time, Vision Pro, the company’s latest major product, has not lived up to expectations.

Additional pressure is also being created by the global shortage of memory chips, caused by high demand from the artificial intelligence industry. This situation is affecting Apple and other companies, pushing them toward product price increases.

Before leaving his post, Cook passed on a direct piece of advice to Ternus: the focus must remain on products that improve users’ lives.

“If you keep focusing on that and make your decisions around it, that will create a great business,” Cook said in April.

After a 15-year period characterized by financial growth and global expansion, Cook’s legacy is now considered consolidated. For John Ternus, the next test will be to prove whether Apple can maintain the same momentum in a new technological phase, as artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the industry.
