Three days off in Tehran for Ali Khamenei’s funeral; here is when his burial will take place

Iranian authorities today declared three days off in Tehran for the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for 37 years and was killed in Israeli-American strikes on the first day of the war, on February 28.

The funeral program calls for honors to be paid to Khamenei from July 4 to 6 and for everything in the capital to be closed, one of the organizers, Hassan Hassanzadeh, told state television. According to foreign media, Ali Khamenei will be buried on July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad, where he was also originally from.

Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, 2026, during an airstrike in Tehran, part of a joint military operation by the United States and Israel. His death was officially confirmed by the Iranian government and state media on March 1, 2026.

After his death, 40 days of national mourning were declared. Currently, his successor as Supreme Leader is his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who was appointed to the post on March 1, 2026, although there have been ongoing reports and speculation regarding his health following the attack in which his father was killed.
