Tensions escalate over the Falklands as Milei cancels UK visit

Argentine President Javier Milei has canceled a planned trip to the United Kingdom in October as disputes over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas Islands, continue to intensify.

Milei’s visit was expected to include a speech at the University of Oxford, as well as meetings with representatives of the British business sector. Argentine media report that the decision to cancel was made as Buenos Aires and London clash more sharply over sovereignty and the exploitation of natural resources in the archipelago.

The Argentine president had previously said that he wanted to travel to the United Kingdom and contribute to finding a peaceful solution to the Falklands issue.

Tensions have risen particularly in recent days. The Argentine government has imposed punitive measures on 60 individuals and entities linked to oil operations on the islands, while also launching criminal proceedings against several companies.

The main cause of the dispute is the Sea Lion oil project. Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum plan to drill in the waters surrounding the islands.

Oil production is scheduled to begin in 2028. Argentina opposes the initiative and considers the exploitation of the resources illegal, citing its claim to sovereignty over the waters surrounding the Falklands.

Britain, meanwhile, has made clear that it has no plans to relinquish control of the islands.

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has reiterated that the commitment to the Falklands is “absolute and unwavering.” According to him, the islands are British because their residents have chosen to be part of the United Kingdom.

The Falklands issue remains one of the most sensitive points in relations between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The 1982 war ended in a British victory, but Buenos Aires has not abandoned its claim to sovereignty over the archipelago.

During a recent address to the public, Milei also announced the allocation of new funding for the construction of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego, in southern Argentina.

The base is intended to increase the country’s military presence near the islands. The Argentine president also reaffirmed Buenos Aires’s official position that the Malvinas Islands are Argentine territory “by history and by right.”
