Tensions at the Pentagon: Dan Driscoll Leaves After Clashes with Pete Hegseth

Dan Driscoll, the U.S. Army secretary and the force’s highest-ranking political official, has submitted his resignation to U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision came after a months-long conflict, conducted largely out of the public eye and linked to sweeping changes at the highest levels of military leadership.

At the center of the dispute was his relationship with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The two repeatedly clashed over the removal of senior Army officials, including figures with considerable operational experience on the fronts where the United States has fought over the past two decades.

The disagreements went beyond differing visions for the Army’s future. They affected the military hierarchy itself, as well as the way senior officers were selected and promoted.

One of the most serious episodes occurred when Driscoll refused to remove several officers’ names from the promotion list. That stance prompted Hegseth’s direct intervention.

The confrontation came after one of the Army secretary’s close aides was removed. In April, before the end of his term, Army Chief of Staff General Randy George was also dismissed.

George’s case represented more than a change at the top of the hierarchy. It was part of a series of departures that has significantly reduced the number of four-star generals in the U.S. Army. Of the ten generals holding these positions in January 2025, only five remain.

Driscoll’s resignation carries particular weight because of his political role. He was not a peripheral figure in the Trump administration, but had a close personal relationship with Vice President J.D. Vance and had taken on responsibilities extending beyond the formal boundaries of his position.

The U.S. government had also involved Driscoll in contacts related to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Within the Army, meanwhile, he had been tasked with accelerating its adaptation to modern warfare, including the widespread use of drones, cheaper weapons systems and the faster integration of new technologies.

For a time, his name was even mentioned as a possible alternative for the position held by Hegseth himself.

The White House kept a low profile regarding his departure. The official announcement did not mention the conflicts that preceded his resignation, but highlighted Driscoll’s contribution to operational readiness and the missions he had carried out on behalf of the government.

Nevertheless, his departure cannot be viewed separately from developments at the Pentagon in recent months.

This is another departure from the Pentagon’s leadership at a time when the reshaping of personnel and power balances under Donald Trump’s presidency is causing deep clashes within the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Trump administration is rapidly reshaping not only the figures holding key positions, but also the very structure of leadership within the U.S. military. The departure of a secretary who until recently had significant access to the White House shows that the struggle over who will determine the future of the U.S. Army has reached its peak.
