Tehran Insists Hormuz Is Under Its Sovereignty as Clashes Intensify in Peace Talks

Iran has said that authority over the Strait of Hormuz belongs to it, heightening international concern over one of the most important energy transit chokepoints in the world.

Against this backdrop, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security commission in the Iranian parliament, said that the decision to keep the strait open or close it rests in the hands of Iran and its armed forces. “The Strait of Hormuz is not your personal property. These are sovereign Iranian waters and the final decision belongs to the people of Iran,” Azizi wrote on the X platform.

This statement comes at a time when the United States and Iran are engaged in diplomatic talks aimed at managing maritime traffic and avoiding further escalation.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most strategic sea passages globally. A significant share of the oil and natural gas traded on international markets passes through it. Any disruption to movement in this area would have an immediate impact on global energy prices and the world economy. During the latest conflict, Iran closed and reopened this waterway corridor several times, using it as an instrument of pressure against its opponents.

Meanwhile, Washington has taken steps to guarantee the free movement of ships through Hormuz through diplomatic initiatives and naval operations. However, efforts to reach a long-term solution have yet to produce a complete result. According to the parties involved, one of the key issues in the peace negotiations remains the control and security of this waterway.

Iran has stressed that it will not fully reopen the strait unless its conditions for a regional ceasefire are met, making Hormuz one of the hottest flashpoints of the current crisis.
