Tahiri: Institutions must take action following report on the Specialist Chambers

Alliance MP Besnik Tahiri took part in a roundtable organized by the Ombudsperson, where the ex officio report on the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office was presented.

In a Facebook post, Tahiri said the report highlights a serious lack of oversight of the Specialist Chambers by the constitutional institutions of the Republic of Kosovo.

Another issue he raised was the lack of transparency surrounding the extension of the mandate of the People’s Advocate. According to Tahiri, the procedures, criteria and work results that served as the basis for this decision have not been made clear.

“The time for emotional statements and praise has passed. Kosovo’s institutions must now act based on facts and clear standards,” Tahiri declared.

He called on the Assembly of Kosovo, the Committee on Legislation and other institutions to responsibly review the conclusions of the report prepared by an independent constitutional institution.

Tahiri said that the Assembly of Kosovo has the authority to review the law in line with international standards if the evidence shows that changes are necessary.

In conclusion, the MP stressed that accountability is one of the basic principles of democracy.

“Accountability is not a matter of choice, but the foundation of democracy,” Tahiri concluded.
