Tabaku Accuses Government of “Tailor-Made Laws” for KAYO: Tax Breaks for Those Close to Power, Burden for Farmers

Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has accused the government of pursuing a tax policy in favor of the company KAYO, while farmers and livestock breeders continue to face a heavy tax burden.

In her public statement, Tabaku referred to an initiative undertaken by the government several weeks ago, through which it seeks to include in the category of machinery exempt from VAT the equipment used or expected to be used by KAYO.

According to the Democratic MP, this case demonstrates how “tailor-made laws” work and what she describes as a “personal state.” She said that, although this phenomenon has been discussed extensively, there are still citizens who ask how such a policy can be identified in practice.

Tabaku said that for more than one term, farmers and livestock breeders have been calling for a reduction or easing of VAT in agriculture, but their demands have been rejected by the ministers responsible for the sector in every discussion held by the Committee on Economy and Finance.

She emphasized that agriculture accounts for around 15% of GDP, provides employment for a large part of the Albanian population and is currently experiencing one of the sharpest declines in the country’s economy.

In Tabaku’s assessment, while no solution is offered to farmers, companies close to the government receive tax exemptions, strategic investor status and public land through swift approvals.

The MP also drew attention to the policies of countries in the region, which apply lower rates to basic food-basket products. According to her, these measures make regional producers more competitive, while Albania’s Socialist government continues to burden farmers with VAT, weaken “Made in Albania” products and encourage informality.

In conclusion, Tabaku described this model as governance that supports a privileged minority and acts against the neglected majority. According to her, this is the concrete picture of the “personal state” and the “socialist system.”
