Suspect detained after fire at “Eagle’s Nest,” Hitler’s former residence

A person has been detained by police in the German state of Bavaria following a fire that engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus, Adolf Hitler’s mountain residence, also known as the “Eagle’s Nest.”

Traunstein’s emergency services center received a report of the flames on Friday at 9:15 p.m. local time. When they arrived, firefighters found that the building was on fire.

The difficult mountainous terrain made it more challenging to extinguish the flames. According to police authorities, the fire was still burning during the early hours of Saturday, while around 200 emergency service personnel took part in the operation.

The authorities have not reported any injuries. Meanwhile, a criminal investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the fire and establish whether the detained person is connected to the incident.

Kehlsteinhaus is located in the Bavarian Alps, above the town of Berchtesgaden, in southern Germany. The building was completed by the Nazis in 1938, and Hitler used it as a mountain residence for meetings with his associates and commanders.

One year after the start of the Second World War, in 1941, Hitler and other Nazi leaders held meetings in the area related to preparations for the invasion of the Soviet Union.

The site was also used as a backdrop for propaganda materials in which the Nazi regime sought to portray Hitler as a figure close to nature and animals.

After Germany’s defeat in 1945, the building was not destroyed, unlike many other sites associated with the Nazi regime.

Today, the “Eagle’s Nest” is a well-known tourist attraction and also operates as a mountain lodge. However, its past remains linked to the Nazi dictatorship and the crimes committed during the Second World War.

On its official website, the building is also presented as a cautionary reminder of the inhumane consequences of Nazi dictatorship.

During the Second World War, Adolf Hitler and his regime were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people, including millions of European Jews murdered during the Holocaust.

The investigation into the fire at the “Eagle’s Nest” is still ongoing, while German authorities are working to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
