A new study shows that ultraviolet radiation has increased significantly in parts of Europe over the past ten years, heightening concerns about skin and eye health.

Data show that between 2013 and 2022, UV radiation levels in certain European areas increased by 10 to 20 percent.
The research was published in the scientific journal “Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences” and is based on measurements taken by 40 monitoring stations in 19 European countries. The data were collected over a ten-year period.
According to the authors, this is the first time that such an increase, previously identified in only a few countries, has been observed across a broader range of areas in Europe.
Reduced cloud cover contributes to the increase
The reduction in cloud cover over the continent is considered one of the main causes of this trend. Experts believe that climate change has played a role in this process.
By contrast, recorded changes in the ozone layer appear to have had a more limited impact on the increase in UV radiation measured at the Earth’s surface.
The analysis used both direct measurements from ground-based stations and satellite data on radiation worldwide. More than 50 researchers from institutions in 19 European countries contributed to the study.
Effects on the skin and eyesight
Germany’s Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) says that greater exposure to UV radiation poses an increasing threat to public health.
Ultraviolet radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer, while exposure can also cause eye damage.
In Germany, skin cancer ranks among the most common forms of the disease. Meanwhile, around 150,000 new cases of melanoma are recorded in the European Union each year.
Specialists stress that sun protection measures have become even more important, especially on days when the UV index is high.
Continuous monitoring remains essential
The study’s authors emphasize the need for long-term monitoring of UV radiation levels in Europe. Continuous data collection enables scientists to identify differences between regions, the effects of the climate, and trends that could affect human health.
BfS President Inge Paulini says regular, long-term measurements are essential to gain a clearer understanding of these developments and assess the health risks.
More effective measures are also needed to protect the public. According to experts, expanding green spaces in cities and creating more shaded areas could help reduce exposure to high temperatures and excessive UV radiation.
