Strait of Hormuz remains closed as Trump rejects Tehran’s offer

Iran will await the official response from the United States before deciding on its next steps, after President Donald Trump rejected a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels within seven days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran expects mediators to communicate the final position of the American side. Only after that, he said, will Iran make a decision.

Trump described Iran’s proposal as unacceptable, stressing that Washington wants an agreement that would guarantee the immediate reopening of the strait. Araghchi said the conditions presented by Tehran are the same as those included in a memorandum of understanding reached between the two countries in June.

According to Iran, the reopening of this waterway and an end to hostilities were among the issues discussed during negotiations in New York, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key corridor for international energy transportation. Around one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply normally passes through it. Oman, which has mediated between the United States and Iran, has urged both sides to continue the dialogue and cooperate to ensure navigation along this strategic route.

U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker backed Trump’s rejection, describing the Iranian proposal as insufficient.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said American economic measures are exerting pressure on Iran, particularly through restrictions on the banking and transportation sectors. However, the real impact of the sanctions remains a matter of debate because of the stance of Iran’s main trading partners, including China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil.
