US asks Iran for a public commitment to the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Washington has asked Tehran to come out publicly and guarantee that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to navigation, and to commit to stopping attacks on commercial vessels, following recent incidents in this strategically important maritime corridor.

According to reports in the American media, the US has sent a message through regional intermediaries asking Iran not only to ensure the freedom of movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, but also to publicly acknowledge that the strikes on commercial vessels were the result of a mistake.

This request comes after three commercial tanker ships were attacked at the beginning of this week, significantly increasing tensions between Washington and Tehran. According to American media, Iranian officials have informed their American counterparts that the shooting happened by mistake and that responsibility is attributed to an internal hardline group.

CBS News reports say that Tehran has privately admitted to Trump’s advisers that the incident was a mistake, while also showing willingness to continue negotiations. One American official is quoted as saying that the Iranian side has returned to the negotiating table while taking responsibility for the incident.

US President Donald Trump said that Iran’s attacks mean the end of the ceasefire, but stressed that efforts for talks aimed at ending the conflict will continue. On the other hand, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has accused the US of violating the agreement.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner are expected to arrive in Oman for diplomatic talks. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also in Oman, where he is holding meetings with local officials.

At the same time, a delegation from Qatar held talks in Iran with the aim of easing tensions and helping navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a sea route through which about 20 percent of global trade in oil and liquefied natural gas passes.
