Solidarity through a giant dessert, a gift for children hit by earthquakes in Venezuela

The devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 left behind more than 5,000 victims and thousands more homeless. In the midst of this tragedy, a special initiative attempted to bring a little comfort to the youngest ones.

A cake of impressive dimensions, decorated with the three colors of the national flag, was prepared as a gesture of hope and unity for the children of the Guaira region. For its realization, 25 people were engaged, who had the support of several local organizations in Caracas.

Clarice Antaurgo, 50 years old, was one of the volunteers who contributed to this project. “We did it with all our heart, for the children of Guaira,” she recounted, adding that she firmly believes the community will be able to recover despite the heavy blow.

According to data, the dessert was the largest ever produced in Venezuela, with a length of 7.7 meters, width 1.6 meters and a weight exceeding 330 kilograms. Willman Villegas, the organizer of the initiative, clarified that the goal was not to set any record.

“This is truly an achievement for the country, but it is not a prize to display on a shelf. We prepared it to offer this cake to those who really need it,” declared Villegas.

About 3,000 portions will be distributed to the minors of Guaira on the occasion of “Children’s Day” in Venezuela. Currently, more than 20,000 people continue to stay in tents and improvised shelters after the earthquakes.

According to the latest official reports, the two tremors with magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 caused at least 5,069 deaths while the number of injured has reached 16,740 people. Meanwhile, the United Nations estimates that the missing persons could be up to 50,000, although the authorities have not yet made public official figures for this category.
