Skopje enters the implementation phase of the modern public transport project

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Skopje has entered the implementation phase following the completion of final coordination, marking an important development toward creating a more efficient, more sustainable, and higher-quality public transport system in the capital.

The Mayor of the City of Skopje, Orce Gjorgievski, held a working meeting today with the team of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Macedonia, led by Fatih Turkmenoglu, with the focus on aligning the next steps for the implementation and optimization of this project.

According to the City of Skopje’s announcement, the meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment to successfully implementing the project, as it is considered one of the most important investments for the modernization of public transport in Skopje.

After taking office, through intensive coordination with the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, the EBRD, and other responsible institutions, the long-standing obstacles that had blocked the project were overcome, paving the way for the start of its implementation. The BRT is expected to provide faster, safer, more reliable, and more environmentally friendly public transport, as well as help reduce heavy traffic, improve air quality, and enhance daily life for citizens.

The City of Skopje also stressed that the implementation of the project will not come at the expense of the existing greenery along the boulevard. According to the city authorities, on the contrary, new green areas and additional horticultural interventions are planned, which will create a more contemporary, greener, and more humane urban space.

The BRT is part of a broader strategic plan to transform public transport in Skopje. Alongside this project, an initiative is also being developed to introduce an urban train in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, as well as the purchase of 100 new buses through the Government and the optimization of the existing bus network, with the aim of building an integrated, functional, and modern urban mobility system.
