Scorching Heat Reignites Fires in France, Thousands of Firefighters Battle Flames

A new wave of scorching heat has escalated the wildfire crisis in southwestern France, as thousands of firefighters battle tirelessly to contain the flames that have engulfed the Gironde region.

Warnings from French authorities stress that temperatures could climb to 40 degrees Celsius, significantly increasing the chance of fire spreading. Just on Tuesday, new outbreaks were recorded in 14 areas previously affected by the fire.

Around 2,000 firefighters have been deployed on the ground, while the spokesperson for the national firefighters’ federation described the fight against the fire as a battle of David against Goliath. He said that in recent weeks, four firefighters have died in France.

As a result of the fires, over 220,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes across the country, including around 4,000 vacationers evacuated just from the Lacanau area. So far, the flames have consumed about 240 houses.

Although the city of Bordeaux is not under immediate threat, the dense cloud of smoke has severely affected air quality. Residents and visitors have been forced to wear masks, while some restaurants and commercial activities have suspended operations.

Beyond French borders, the situation remains equally alarming in Spain and Portugal, where extreme heat and drought are fueling the spread of wildfires. Meanwhile in France, since the beginning of July, 184 people have been arrested on suspicion of arson.
