Sam Neill, Star of “Jurassic Park” and “The Piano,” Dies at 78

Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor, has died at the age of 78.

His family announced his death in a statement shared on the actor’s official Instagram account.

According to his family, Neill died in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by those closest to him.

The cause of death was not disclosed. The actor had previously revealed that he had beaten cancer after being diagnosed in 2022 with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer.

“It is with profound sadness that the family of Sam Neill announces his death. Sam was surrounded by his family and departed this life with the dignity that always characterized him. The loss was unexpected, but we are blessed that he remained cancer-free. We thank the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their exceptional care and ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time,” the family’s statement said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded to the news, paying tribute to Neill and his role in Australian and international cinema.

“Sam Neill starred in so many beloved Australian stories and earned a special place in the hearts of Australians. He fought his illness with dignity, humor and strength. He will be greatly missed and always remembered. May he rest in peace,” Albanese wrote.

Born in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Sam Neill grew up in New Zealand. He rose to international fame for his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park.” His filmography also includes successful productions such as “The Piano,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Tudors,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Event Horizon,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and many others.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared in more than 150 films and television series, ranking among the best-known names in world cinema. In recognition of his contribution to the arts, New Zealand honored him with the title of “Sir.”

Sam Neill is survived by four children and six grandchildren.
