RDM warns: Skopje risks a disaster like Gostivar’s if no action is taken on the Jugohrom landfill

The Democratic Renaissance Party of Macedonia (RDM) has raised the alarm that the capital faces a serious risk, similar to the water contamination that hit Gostivar. According to them, the “Jugohrom” landfill near Skopje poses a concrete threat that requires immediate intervention.

From within this political force, they emphasize that institutions must finally shift to preventive action. According to them, the presence of hexavalent chromium in the landfill directly threatens the Rashce spring, which supplies drinking water to all of Skopje. “This chemical substance is extremely poisonous and causes cancer,” RDM warns, adding that any delayed reaction would turn into a tragedy for hundreds of thousands of residents.

The party calls on the responsible authorities to take all necessary steps, pointing out that the safety of drinking water must be treated as the highest national priority. “The protection of our water sources requires the union of citizen voice with political will,” as quoted in the RDM statement.

Meanwhile, public health experts are firm in their stance: the tap water in Gostivar should not be consumed or used for cooking until the competent institutions guarantee its safety.
