RDM: Data center construction requires clear rules, not a race for investment

Following Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski’s statement that the government has no intention of abandoning projects to build data centers, RDM stresses that the issue should not be reduced to the question of whether the country will continue on the path of technological development.

According to RDM, no one opposes digitalization or advances in artificial intelligence. The main debate concerns the conditions under which this infrastructure will be built and the actors who will set those conditions.

For this reason, the organization has also raised the issue at the European level, through a draft resolution on the regulated development of data centers. This draft resolution has been included among the four topics selected for resolutions at the upcoming Congress of the European Green Party, which will be held in Warsaw.

RDM believes that the rules for building data centers and similar infrastructure should be established now, with the participation of the public and all interested parties. It is not enough to state that the process is “irreversible” or that the government will not back down; the criteria and conditions that will guide the country’s future development must first be made clear.

At the same time, responsibility for any negative consequences that may arise must also be defined without ambiguity. RDM warns that data centers must not become part of a race to attract investment, in which the state accepts investors’ demands in advance and treats the public interest as merely a secondary concern.
