Pope Leo opposes increased military budgets in Europe: Peace cannot be achieved through rearmament

Pope Leo called on the parties involved in negotiations to end the war in Europe to show courage and be willing to make concessions on some of their positions, with the aim of achieving peace.

During a speech in the French city of Metz, he described the war as a massacre that causes civilian casualties every day. The Pope was referring to the conflict in Ukraine, although he did not directly mention the country by name.

His appeal comes at a time when efforts to end the war, which began after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, have still failed to produce an agreement. Leo did not clarify which positions the parties should reconsider.

On the final day of his four-day visit to France, the Pope expressed opposition to increased military spending by European countries. He stressed that rearmament is not the solution to the conflict and called on leaders to focus more on dialogue and peacebuilding rather than preparing for future wars.

Leo also addressed Europe’s prospects, calling for the rule of law to be strengthened and for equal treatment for everyone. He urged European countries to work toward the integration of migrants and to open legal and safe channels for migration.
