PDK and the Alliance accuse LVV of undermining the constitutional order

The Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance have accused the Vetëvendosje Movement, claiming that delays in constituting the Assembly of Kosovo are leading to the overthrow of the constitutional order.

During an improvised session in the plenary hall, members of parliament from these political entities said that LVV leader and acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti was not respecting the deadlines. According to them, representatives of the party believe that their political power stands above the Constitution.

PDK MP Përparim Gruda stressed that neither LVV nor any other parliamentary majority can dismantle the country’s democracy.

Gruda described the failure to respect the Constitution in the Assembly as a sign of anarchic rule, which, he said, might at first glance appear to be merely a matter of procedure and deadlines. He warned that authoritarian rule could violate the fundamental rights of everyone, shut down businesses, drive municipalities that had protested the previous day toward bankruptcy, and prevent projects from being carried out.

He also mentioned the failure to implement a ruling by the Supreme Court, according to which a person cannot simultaneously be a member of the government and a member of parliament. According to Gruda, these actions are being taken because the constitutional order has been overturned and those in power have become convinced that their political strength exceeds the Constitution. Referring to European experience, he said that the Republic is not protected solely through the counting of votes and that no majority has the right to destroy the constitutional order that brought it to power.

Alliance MP Albana Bytyqi also addressed the Assembly. She called for the establishment of institutions so that development projects for Kosovo could move forward.

Bytyqi said that the current deadlock had increased citizens’ dissatisfaction with the political spectrum, particularly with LVV representatives.

According to her, the country needs the Assembly and the government to be formed, as well as the election of the president. She said that problems cannot be solved by blocking the state and its institutions with the mentality of the Vetëvendosje Movement. Bytyqi added that citizens are dissatisfied with politicians, but even more so with MPs who, she said, are misusing and abusing the state and power.

The Assembly of Kosovo remains unconstituted, as its speaker has not been elected in either of the two attempts held so far, and the process of constituting the 11th Legislature has not been completed.

The constitutive session continues to cause clashes between parliamentary parties, while the inability to establish institutions is deepening and prolonging the political crisis. PDK and the Alliance claim that the 11th Legislature was not constituted within the constitutional deadline, which they define as 30 days from the certification of the June 7 elections.

Meanwhile, on August 31, LVV and LDK had reached an agreement to nominate Bekim Sejdiu as the country’s president. Together with the non-Serb minorities, the two parties have the 80 votes required to elect the president.

However, during a meeting of the LDK Parliamentary Group held on September 1, it was announced that six MPs from the party would not enable Sejdiu’s election as president.
