Over 60 new names for Tetova’s streets, including Albanian and Macedonian figures

The Street Naming Commission in Tetova met today for the first time after a 165-day break, approving a list of more than 60 new names for the city’s arteries.

The commission chairman emphasized that the new names will reflect the city’s ethnic composition, including personalities who have served the Albanian and Macedonian nations, as well as world-famous figures.

“Tetova’s streets should express the city’s full identity, its historical, cultural heritage, and multi-ethnic character. They will honor the greatest names of Albanian history and nation, such as Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, Naim, Sami, and Abdyl Frashëri, as well as Gonxhe Bojaxhiu – Mother Teresa,” Qamili stated.

He added that the list also includes personalities who have left indelible marks in the fields of culture, education, and sports in Tetova, mentioning the names of Murat Isaku, Abdylaziz Islami, conductor Bani Jaja, and footballer Haçim Memeti.

The selection also features some of the towering figures of contemporary Albanian culture, such as writer Ismail Kadare, poet Migjeni, and actor Bekim Fehmiu.

Regarding neighborhoods where fellow citizens of Macedonian ethnicity live, Qamili announced that they will no longer bear names inherited from the Yugoslav era. They will be replaced with key figures of Macedonian history and art, including Krste Petkov Misirkov, director Branko Gapo, and sculptor Borka Avramova.
