Norway’s Longest-Reigning Monarch, Harald V, Dies at 89

After a long battle with a rare hematological disorder, King Harald V of Norway has died at the country’s main hospital. He was 89.

The Royal Palace announced that the sovereign died peacefully on Friday morning at 6:35 a.m. local time at Oslo University Hospital.

Members of his family stayed by his side in his final moments, while outside the royal residence, many citizens began gathering to lay bouquets of flowers as a mark of respect.

After around three and a half decades at the head of state, Harald V will be remembered as the monarch who brought a spirit of modernization and transparency to the institution of the crown. His historic decision to defy centuries-old conventions and marry a woman without a noble background turned him into a symbol of change.

His heir, Crown Prince Haakon, is now the lawful successor to the Norwegian throne.

A sovereign close to the people

Harald V was widely regarded as a highly popular figure, often described in public opinion as “the king of the nation” and a kind of “grandfather” to the entire population.

Under his leadership, the Norwegian royal household became significantly more open to society, more accessible and less distant. Royal protocol experts describe him as a modest, dignified individual with a rare ability to openly express his feelings, humor and human vulnerability.

One of the defining chapters of his reign was written after the national tragedy of July 22, 2011, when violent attacks by extremist Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in the capital and on the island of Utøya.

In the hours and days that followed the massacre, the king called on the nation to preserve its unity and not give in to terror.

His moving speech, filled with grief for those killed and their families, was not delivered from the position of a head of state, but with the sensitivity of a parent, a husband and a grandfather.

Later, in 2016, he once again became the focus of attention with a powerful speech on inclusion, emphasizing that Norway is a mosaic of people with different origins, religious beliefs, sexual orientations and convictions.

A love story that broke barriers

Born on February 21, 1937, at the royal residence of Skaugum, near Oslo, Harald’s life was marked by war from an early age.

Just three years old when Nazi Germany’s troops invaded the country during World War II, he fled with his mother and siblings to Sweden. The family later traveled to the United States at the invitation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After the conflict ended, Harald returned to Norway, completed his education and served in the armed forces. In 1957, he was given the title of Crown Prince.

Later, from 1960 to 1962, he studied social sciences, history and economics at Balliol College, University of Oxford.

He fell in love with Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a merchant. Their relationship nevertheless met with strong resistance, as it was expected that the prince would marry a descendant of a European dynasty.

Harald spent nine full years insisting before receiving approval. In the face of the opposition, he told his father, King Olav V, unequivocally that the only alternative to marrying Sonja would be lifelong bachelorhood.

King Olav relented, and the wedding ceremony took place at Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968.

Harald’s personal choice served as a turning point for court traditions, paving the way for the next generation to be free to marry people outside aristocratic circles.

A deep passion for sport

Beyond his royal duties, Harald V was a dedicated athlete, particularly passionate about sailing.

In this discipline, he had the honor of carrying the Norwegian flag at three different editions of the Olympic Games. He only ended his sailing-racing career in 2022.

He was also a strong advocate for the protection of nature and played a key role in establishing the Norwegian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Health challenges and turmoil within the family

The final period of Harald V’s life and reign was marked by serious health challenges and a wave of controversies that shook the royal household.

In April 2024, he announced a permanent reduction in his official schedule.

The illness that led to his hospitalization was hemolytic anemia, a rare condition in which the immune system destroys red blood cells, for which he was being treated with cortisone.

On August 17, his condition worsened, requiring hospitalization, and Crown Prince Haakon assumed the functions of regent, carrying out all state duties in place of his father.

At the same time, the palace faced media pressure because of Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby. In June, an Oslo court found him guilty of several criminal offenses, including rape, and sentenced him to four years in prison, a ruling he has appealed.

Mette-Marit’s former relationship with controversial American financier Jeffrey Epstein was also at the center of public discussion. She herself has publicly apologized, acknowledging that she showed “poor judgment.”

On the health front, the Crown Princess, who has long suffered from a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis, underwent a lung transplant procedure.

A new era with King Haakon

With the death of Harald V, Norway is opening a new monarchical chapter.

The throne is now occupied by his son, Haakon, who inherits an institution at a delicate time, accompanied by controversies and personal difficulties within the family.

Although recent polls show a slight decline in popular support for the monarchy, dissatisfaction and criticism have rarely been directed at Harald V personally.

For the overwhelming majority of Norwegians, he remains one of the most beloved sovereigns in the country’s history.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 58 years, Queen Sonja; their daughter, Princess Märtha Louise; their son and the new king, Haakon; as well as six grandchildren.
