Nigel Farage Challenges Prime Minister Andy Burnham: Calls for Immediate Election, Says His Mandate Is Illegitimate

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has called on British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to hold a national election, stressing that he lacks a direct mandate from the electorate to implement his promised changes.

At a rally in Norfolk, Farage argued that Burnham had taken the reins of the Labour Party without an internal contest and, in his view, does not have the necessary legitimacy to carry out sweeping political changes.

“You cannot undertake the biggest change in British politics in the past four decades without a mandate from the public. The honest and proper thing to do would be to call a general election, and that must happen immediately,” he said.

These remarks coincide with Farage’s own renewed bid for the parliamentary seat in Clacton, after he resigned as an MP on July 7, at a time when his finances and a parliamentary investigation were under close scrutiny.

In the by-election for the constituency, Farage is the only representative of a major national party, after Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party chose not to field candidates. A total of 34 names have been registered for the contest.
