Andy Burnham’s First 24 Hours as UK Prime Minister: Cabinet Changes, Swift Decisions and an Election Dilemma

Andy Burnham has begun his tenure as the new prime minister of the United Kingdom with a sweeping government reshuffle and immediate policy measures, signaling that he intends to act without delay.

The decision that attracted the most attention was the appointment of John Healey as chancellor, a choice widely seen as unexpected in British politics.

Healey, the former defence secretary, had left his post just five weeks earlier following clashes with former prime minister Keir Starmer over military spending. The reshuffle has prompted mixed reactions within the Labour Party. Labour MPs say the ministers who were dismissed can be grouped into three categories: those who had political disagreements with Burnham, those deemed to have performed poorly in office and those who lacked sufficient support within the parliamentary party.

Anneliese Midgley, a Burnham ally, has been tasked with ensuring the unity of the parliamentary party. Meanwhile, criticism voiced by several former ministers indicates that the changes have not been welcomed by everyone.

Meanwhile, speculation is growing in Westminster that a possible rise in poll support could prompt Burnham to call an early election. According to the speculation, such a move would help him secure a full mandate to implement his governing program.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has called for an early election, arguing that Burnham was not directly elected by voters to serve as prime minister. However, Reform UK sources acknowledge that such a development may not benefit the party, which is facing internal problems.

Other opposition parties are also preparing for such a possibility. The Liberal Democrats have announced that they have begun organizing for a potential election campaign.

Burnham has so far given no indication that he is planning to call an early election. Nevertheless, political analysts say he faces a difficult choice: seek a new mandate for his reforms or continue governing during a period expected to be marked by economic difficulties and political tensions.
