NATO fighter jets shoot down drone after it enters Lithuanian airspace

An unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Lithuanian airspace overnight was shot down by NATO fighter jets. The news was confirmed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

In a post on the X platform, Nauseda said the drone was immediately neutralized by alliance aircraft but did not say which country it belonged to. The president linked the incident to the escalation of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“As Russia intensifies its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Together with our NATO allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace,” Nauseda said.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys expressed gratitude to NATO allies, praising their presence and assistance in ensuring the country’s security.

“Our sincerest thanks go to the allies whose presence helps protect our skies and strengthen our security,” Budrys wrote on X. He added that NATO remains vigilant, committed and prepared to respond to potential threats.

Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT, citing the National Crisis Management Center, reported that the drone was shot down in a rural area near Kaunas Reservoir in central Lithuania. So far, the authorities have not disclosed any further information about the aircraft’s origin or mission.

The incident occurred at a time when tensions on NATO’s eastern flank remain high. The war in Ukraine continues, while the Baltic states have strengthened security measures in response to potential threats from Russia.
