Nagavci: The president should be non-partisan, after LDK’s request for this post

Arbëria Nagavci, a member of the leadership of the Vetëvendosje Movement, said their preference is for a non-partisan figure to be proposed for the post of president, someone who would have a more unifying role and would carry out the duty with responsibility and competence.

After taking part in an event organized to mark the 90th anniversary of Rexhep Qosja’s birth, Nagavci said the aim is to avoid a new crisis, make the institutions functional and move forward with issues that matter to citizens.

“In this speech I have not made statements about specific names of candidates who wish to be president, whether male or female. In any case, we expect to have a consensual candidate. Non-partisan, non-partisan figures, who would, I believe, carry out their position and unifying role with competence and responsibility as well. In this case, will you have a party candidate or an institutional one? This is an issue that should be discussed now, even before the October election. We have asked the ruling parties to propose their names for president. We have been ready to give our signatures to mandate the candidates for president, we have been ready to co-govern with Vetëvendosje, we have likewise been ready, but we are determined to avoid a new crisis, make the institutions functional and continue with the tasks that are important for citizens,” Nagavci said, as reported by KosovaPress.

She added that developments clearly showed there was no movement whatsoever from deputies of the other parties who were in the Assembly for the election of the president, while the subsequent elections, according to her, once again reconfirmed that the Vetëvendosje Movement is the largest political force in this legislature, larger than all the other parties together, excluding Vetëvendosje as the first, second and third force, and so on.

Nagavci said she is convinced that deputies will respect the will of the citizens. She underlined that there is not much time to lose, as there are international agreements and projects waiting to be reviewed.

Asked by journalists whether Ramush Haradinaj would have LVV’s support for president, Nagavci said it is absurd for someone who has used, as she put it, “reckless words” to ask for support.

“Now, as I said, I would not like to speak about specific names. For me personally, it is a little absurd that a person, whoever he may be, who has spoken reckless words, things which they themselves know do not stand up in the Assembly, should now ask to receive support. This says a lot about what happened before and what is happening now, so I believe and repeat that some consensual names should be found, because I believe Kosovo has enough people with integrity, with both personal and professional stature, who would do a very good job as president, whether male or female. Should Ramush Haradinaj also be ruled out? I am not speaking today on behalf of the movement about such names, but what I can say is that it is time to think about the institutions, to think about how we get out of this political crisis and to put aside mere ambitions and personal interests,” Nagavci said.
