Greek authorities have uncovered a wide-ranging fraud scheme operating under the cover of a nongovernmental organization. According to suspicions, its leaders used donations collected from citizens to provide treatment and financial assistance to children with serious illnesses, including children affected by cancer.
An investigation by the Greek Police estimates that the illegal proceeds from the activity amounted to approximately 2 million 829 thousand euros. During an operation carried out on Friday, October 30, 2026, in several areas of Greece, six people were arrested on suspicion of being members of a structured criminal organization divided into two groups.

The investigation began following a report concerning the association’s operations and transparency. The Directorate for Combating Organized Crime in Northern Greece suspects that the first group consisted of a 37-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, who had established the scheme in October 2018, using the nonprofit association as a cover.
The organization organized charity campaigns and asked citizens for contributions for children suffering from serious illnesses or living with disabilities. However, according to the authorities, these initiatives were conducted without the authorizations required by law, while the association’s actual activities did not correspond to its publicly stated purpose.
Only a limited portion of the funds collected reached the child beneficiaries. The remainder, investigators suspect, was misappropriated by the 37-year-old man and the 35-year-old woman.
At the same time, the investigation has also revealed the use of illegal proceeds to finance sports clubs and influence the results of football matches. The Greek Police said that the organization operated through two subgroups, with different activities that were interconnected by one common member.
It is also suspected that some of the money was used for corrupt activities and to exert unlawful influence aimed at manipulating sports results.
During the searches, police seized mobile phones, computers, digital data storage devices, bags and wallets from luxury brands, watches from well-known brands, as well as 18.330 euros in cash.
Following a financial analysis and interviews with the parents of 34 beneficiary children, the authorities estimated the suspected financial damage at approximately 2.829.516 euros.
The six arrested individuals are accused, depending on each person’s role, of participation in a criminal organization, large-scale fraud and embezzlement, money laundering, as well as violations of sports legislation, including bribery to manipulate match results.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the scheme and identify other people who may have been involved.
