More than 70 alerts a week in Kyiv as Ukraine faces its most intense air campaign yet

The Ukrainian capital is recording its highest number of air raid alerts since the full-scale war began in 2022, plunging the city into an almost constant state of heightened vigilance.

A detailed analysis of official statistics confirms that the frequency of attacks has now reached record levels, disrupting education services, business activity and the public transport network for extended periods.

Russia’s air campaign is entering a new phase. Unlike in the early stages of the conflict, when bombardments were concentrated mainly at night, Russian forces are now targeting the metropolis during the day as well, repeatedly disrupting residents’ daily routines.

According to an analysis of data from the official Kyiv Digital app, warning sirens have sounded an average of 10 times within 24 hours since the last week of August.

The figures are even more alarming for the period from August 27 to September 2, when a total of 76 air threat alerts were recorded. By comparison, about 66 such incidents were recorded during the first week of the Russian offensive in February 2022, according to the BBC.

Although records from the first days of the war are incomplete, making a direct comparison not entirely accurate, the message is unmistakable: the intensity of the air offensive is rising dramatically.

Round-the-clock attacks have forced residents to seek shelter during as many as 13 separate incidents in a single day. Some alerts last only a few moments, while others have continued for nearly 4 hours and 30 minutes.

As a result, the city’s underground spaces, particularly metro platforms and deep parking garages, have once again been transformed into mass shelters for thousands of people.

The blasts of air defense systems and the explosions of intercepted drones can be heard continuously over the capital.

This new pattern is creating a grim normality for the population, with every daily schedule disrupted without warning by the wail of sirens.

Another cause for concern for Ukraine’s defenses is the deployment of new Russian attack drones equipped with jet propulsion systems.

Some of these new aircraft can reach speeds of up to 595 kilometers per hour, nearly three times the speed of older propeller-driven Shahed models, making them extremely difficult targets to track and neutralize.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched about 2,800 high-speed drones in August alone, nearly twice the number reported in July.

In response to the new threat, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened an emergency meeting with the government cabinet and military leadership, focusing discussions on the production of new high-speed interceptor missiles.

“The enemy has changed the way it carries out strikes and, since August, has been intensifying its terror against our population, urban centers and rural communities,” Zelensky emphasized in his statement.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the combat aviation command, acknowledged that only about 60 percent of these aircraft are currently being destroyed, stressing the urgent need for next-generation interceptors.

The escalation of air operations is having direct consequences for the education sector.

Every time the sirens are activated, students are forced to leave their desks and move quickly to safe areas, meaning lessons are often interrupted several times in the same day.

A Kyiv student named Diana said her sleep had been severely disrupted by repeated alerts, while her daytime schedule remained unpredictable. “We are going through terrible moments, but fortunately we are still alive. We try to live one day at a time,” she explained.

Another young person, who is studying to become a chemistry teacher, complained that the constant threat alerts were seriously undermining educational standards. “Studying properly has become impossible,” he said.

Teenager Sophia described the experience of living in Kyiv as “terrible” and “extremely exhausting.” The conversation with her was cut short by yet another alert that forced an immediate evacuation. “We cannot stay here. Remaining outside is extremely dangerous,” she said hurriedly.

The campaigns are no longer aimed solely at military targets. According to analysts’ assessments, Moscow is systematically seeking to paralyze the economy by damaging businesses, warehouses and nonmilitary infrastructure.

Businesses in Kyiv are required to suspend operations whenever an alert is issued. Staff evacuate buildings and remain outside or in shelters until the all-clear is given.

The urban transport network is also suffering the consequences. Some metro trains suspend service during alerts, particularly on sections that run above ground across the Dnipro River, causing disruption for passengers who are forced to use alternative bus routes.

To ease this daily paralysis, the authorities are implementing a two-tier warning system. The yellow level indicates a moderate threat, mainly from drones, partially easing restrictions on workplaces, schools and transport. The red level warns of a high level of danger, particularly from missiles, triggering stricter measures and requiring people to seek shelter immediately.

However, the challenges facing Ukraine remain immense. As Russia increases the volume and speed of its aerial barrages, Kyiv is preparing for a potentially harsh winter amid fears that the Kremlin could once again shift the main focus of its strikes to the national energy grid.
