Mickoski: An increase in electricity prices is not anticipated; we are considering price cuts

The Government of North Macedonia has no plans to increase electricity bills for consumers. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski announced today that work is under way on a formula aimed at achieving precisely the opposite—cutting prices or increasing the amount of electricity offered at a reduced tariff, an approach entirely different from that being pursued by most European countries.

Mickoski stressed that the country is managing to withstand the factors putting pressure on energy costs, including tensions in the Persian Gulf region and the issue of water levels in the Danube River.

According to him, the government’s strategy is not focused on fueling public alarm, but on quiet and measured work, with gradual steps that yield results and raise the population’s standard of living.

“Currently, at the end of the irrigation season, our reservoirs are around 70 percent full and we have nearly 500 gigawatt-hours of stored energy. This amount fully guarantees our security and spares us any difficulties in supplying electricity to both households and the industrial sector,” the prime minister said in his address.

He also announced that major energy infrastructure projects are being implemented, highlighting the investment by the company “Alcazar” in a wind farm across the territories of the municipalities of Shtip, Karbinci and Radovish, a financial commitment worth nearly half a billion dollars that will be carried out in three stages.

“Macedonia is now stable and protected, but at the same time we are drawing up a vision for the next decade. Although the burden we inherited is heavy, we are not giving up; we are addressing the problems one by one,” Mickoski added.

Regarding the fuel market, the prime minister pointed out that North Macedonia has maintained prices around half a euro cheaper per liter than those in neighboring countries, and that this trend continues today. He also drew attention to the global energy turmoil, emphasizing that the war in the Persian Gulf and the confrontation with Iran have created extraordinary pressure on international energy exchanges.
