Meloni and Frederiksen unite stances: Europe cannot accept uncontrolled immigration

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Danish counterpart, Social Democrat Mette Frederiksen, have expressed through a joint statement on social media their intention to coordinate efforts against “uncontrolled immigration”. According to them, this phenomenon brings “negative impacts on society”.

The appeal of the two leaders aims to send a message to Europe and is published at a time of tensions between Italy and Spain. The clashes followed the crisis in Ceuta and the subsequent decision by Palazzo Chigi to suspend the implementation of the Schengen Agreement.

In a Facebook post, Meloni announced that together with the Danish prime minister she is presenting some thoughts on the future of Europe, the security of citizens, and the necessity to preserve European values and way of life.

Meloni and Frederiksen were the initiators of the letter that 22 European countries sent to the institutions of the European Union, immediately after more than 70,000 illegal migrants arrived in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In their message, they acknowledge that many people may question this cooperation.

The two prime ministers emphasize that they come from very different political directions and that they do not share the same opinion on every issue. They note that they are the only two women leading governments in the EU, while one leads a large southern state and the other a small northern country. Despite these differences, according to them, they are united by the will to defend Europe.

Meloni and Frederiksen declare that they do not accept uncontrolled immigration to the continent and that they have supported strict immigration policies, both in their own countries and at the broader European level. They list as consequences of illegal immigration the increase in crime, the ever-greater pressure on public services, and the weakening of citizens’ trust.

According to the two leaders, the situation becomes particularly serious when illegal migrants, who have no right to stay in their countries, become involved in violent crimes and drug trafficking.

They also assess that European citizens demand concrete measures from political representatives. The statement says that for too long, especially ordinary people have borne a very heavy burden as a result of uncontrolled immigration.

Meloni and Frederiksen underline that they have the responsibility to continue the engagement with determination, giving citizens concrete solutions, especially those who are most exposed. The goal, according to them, is to guarantee a higher level of security and protection for European communities.
