Macron Returns With His Blue “Top Gun”-Style Glasses, Staff Clarifies: It’s the Same Concern

French President Emmanuel Macron appeared once again wearing aviator-style glasses, similar to those of the main character in the film “Top Gun,” as he welcomed the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, in the courtyard of the Élysée Palace.

Macron wore these glasses publicly for the first time during the World Economic Forum in Davos in January this year, prompting numerous reactions and comments around the world. At the time, the official explanation was that he had problems “with one eye.” According to sources in his close circle, the reason remains the same this time as well.

There was speculation that the use of the glasses was linked to the strong June sun, at the height of this extreme heatwave that brought record temperatures. However, the staff of the French head of state again stressed that it was the same eye problem as in January, without giving further details.

Just as in Davos, Macron did not remove the glasses even after entering the interior of the Élysée Palace, where he took part in the agreement-signing ceremony with the sultan. He later kept them on at the hotel where the France-Oman Economic Forum was held.

During the Davos Forum, photos of Macron wearing the blue glasses circulated widely on social media, not only because of his appearance, but also because of the way he pronounced the English expression “for sure,” which he repeated several times in his speech, during a period when relations with Donald Trump were at their most tense.

Later, Trump also contributed to the growing fame of these glasses, mocking the French president by saying that he was trying to act “tough” in front of him, while showing off what the White House chief sarcastically called “his beautiful sunglasses.”
