Larak, Iran’s Strategic Point in the Strait of Hormuz That Had Long Been on the Pentagon’s Plans

Although it occupies only a small space on the map, Larak Island carries significant strategic weight for Iran because of its location in the Strait of Hormuz, near the corridors used by oil tankers.

Larak is an Iranian island with an area of approximately 49 square kilometers. It lies near the strategic port of Bandar Abbas and occupies a dominant position over the sea routes linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

The island lies east of Qeshm and south of Hormuz Island, near one of the narrowest and most strategically important sections of the Strait of Hormuz.

This location has given Larak an important role in Iran’s surveillance of the area. From the island, Iranian forces can track the movements of commercial vessels and tankers along the main maritime corridors.

Radars, as well as other equipment used for maritime surveillance and navigation, have been installed on Larak to monitor sea traffic.

However, the island’s function extends beyond surveillance. Larak is also home to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps base, along with facilities linked to the transportation and export of oil, which were established starting in the late 1980s.

The Revolutionary Guard uses the island’s ports to conduct naval operations and to control the movement of vessels in this part of the Strait.

Larak’s importance is also linked to navigational security and the monitoring of routes through which a considerable share of the oil shipped to global markets passes.

Attention returned to the island on Sunday evening after U.S. forces bombed two missile-launch positions on Larak. This was the first known U.S. attack against targets inside Iran since late July.

Following the strike, Iran warned that it would retaliate and later launched eight ballistic missiles toward U.S. bases in Jordan. Authorities said all eight missiles were intercepted.

The reasons for the U.S. targeting of Larak are linked to its military and strategic role. The island had long been viewed as a potential target if tensions between Washington and Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz escalated.

According to Axios, the Pentagon had previously included Larak in its plans and military options for striking Iranian facilities linked to efforts to obstruct or control shipping in the Strait.

Sunday’s strike was carried out after U.S. forces said they had detected preparations by the Revolutionary Guard to lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

From Washington’s perspective, such a move would pose a direct risk both to international shipping and to global energy supplies.

For Tehran, control over strategic points along the Strait of Hormuz remains an essential part of its military strategy and the pressure it exerts on its adversaries.

Despite its limited territory, Larak remains one of the most sensitive points on the map of the U.S.-Iran confrontation, as it sits on the edge of one of the world’s most important energy arteries.
