Kosovo’s Institutional Deadlock Continues, Analysts Call for Political Agreement

The Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party of Kosovo has announced that it will appear in the Assembly of Kosovo chamber on Monday at 11:00. The move comes as part of its demand for the resumption of the constitutive session and the completion of the Assembly’s constitution.

Meanwhile, Kosovo’s new institutions remain non-functional due to the political deadlock. The latest meeting between LVV and LDK has raised hopes of a possible rapprochement, but no concrete agreement has been reached so far.

Analysts believe that the parties must overcome their political interests and calculations, placing citizens’ needs and the swift establishment of institutions first.

LVV and LDK are holding discussions within their respective structures and are expected to hold another meeting soon, with the post of president set to be the main topic.

An agreement between these two political entities is seen as an alternative to avoiding elections. However, political experts stress that a solution should be sought across the entire political spectrum.

“We hope that the agreement between the political entities, LVV and LDK, will be finalised as soon as possible and that they will offer the country a solution regarding the issue of the president. It would be positive for other opposition entities to join this agreement as well, so that the process and the institution of the president itself have the broadest possible support,” said political analyst Ramadan Baraliu.

According to experts, political entities are responsible for taking citizens’ interests into account and establishing the country’s new institutions as soon as possible.

“The current political crisis surrounding the election of the president should primarily be viewed as a political problem rather than in other aspects. It is important for all political structures in the Assembly of Kosovo to sit down and reach a consensus, in order to provide the country with a president who is as broadly consensual as possible and within the shortest possible timeframe,” Baraliu stated.

Naim Jakaj, a senior researcher at IKD, warned that the lack of an agreement could have consequences for citizens and civil society.

“If this does not happen, meaning if there is no political agreement and political parties want to go to elections, then we as civil society and as citizens will only see the consequences that will arise as a result of the lack of institutions in the Republic of Kosovo,” Jakaj said.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo continues to insist on remaining in opposition. Meanwhile, the Alliance has refused to meet with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti until its six conditions are met.

Another meeting between Kurti and Abdixhiku has been announced for the coming days. According to announcements, concrete names for the post of president are expected to be discussed at this meeting.
