Kim Jong-un’s daughter reappears at official ceremony, at the center of succession speculation

The 14-year-old daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un again joined him at commemorative events marking the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice. The moment has reinforced speculation that she is being groomed for a key position in the future leadership hierarchy.

Ju Ae appeared for the first time at the event commemorating the 1953 ceasefire agreement, an armistice that ended the fighting but did not formally end the conflict, leaving the two Koreas technically still at war today.

Reports from state agency KCNA detailed that Kim Jong-un and his wife laid floral wreaths at the graves of fallen soldiers, inspected war memorials, met with veterans, and paid respects at monuments to first-generation revolutionaries. In his speech, the northern leader reaffirmed the regime’s narrative that the nation had secured a ‘great triumph’ in the 1950-53 conflict.

Images and television footage broadcast by state channels show the teenager closely accompanying her father, positioned at the center of rituals and exchanging greetings with veterans. Experts consider this exposure a significant indication of her growing public role.

Also, the Ministry of Unification in the south of the peninsula confirmed that this was a debut for Ju Ae at the armistice anniversary, as well as at visits to the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), relying on what it considers reliable sources, has concluded that Ju Ae is already emerging as the frontrunner to take the reins of power after her father. This assessment is based on the child’s increasing frequency and high visibility in official agendas and North Korea’s controlled media.

During the commemorations, Kim Jong-un also stopped at the cemetery of Chinese volunteers and paid special tribute at the grave of Mao Anying, the son of Mao Zedong. According to KCNA’s interpretation, this gesture serves as an additional signal of rapprochement between Pyongyang and Beijing, at a time when both sides are deepening political and diplomatic synchronization.
