Kim Jong-un’s 14-year-old daughter appears at official ceremony, fueling succession speculation

The presence of Kim Jong-un’s daughter, who is just 14 years old, at events commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the Korean Peninsula armistice has intensified discussions about the possibility of her becoming the next successor to North Korea’s leadership.

Ju Ae debuted at these commemorations related to the 1953 agreement that halted open hostilities, although the conflict between the two Koreas technically remains unresolved without a peace treaty.

Reports from the KCNA agency indicate that the North Korean leader and his daughter conducted a series of activities, including laying wreaths at the cemeteries of fallen heroes, inspecting military cemeteries, meeting with former combatants, and paying tribute at monuments to early revolutionaries. In his speech, Kim Jong-un reaffirmed Pyongyang’s narrative of what he described as a “glorious victory” in the war fought between 1950 and 1953.

Footage broadcast by the regime’s official channels shows the young girl alongside her father, positioned at the center of attention and interacting with veterans. Experts view this behavior as a clear indicator of an effort to elevate her public profile.

Additionally, the Unification Ministry in Seoul noted that this marked Ju Ae’s first participation in the armistice anniversary, as well as her inaugural visit to the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has expressed an assessment, based on sources it considers reliable, that Ju Ae’s position is already solidifying as Kim Jong-un’s most likely heir. This conclusion is based on the increasing frequency and significance of her appearances in state agendas and North Korean state-controlled media.

During these commemorative activities, Kim Jong-un also visited the cemetery of Chinese volunteer soldiers, where he paid special tribute at the grave of Mao Anying, the son of former leader Mao Zedong. According to KCNA, this gesture is read as another message about deepening the alliance between Pyongyang and Beijing, at a time when both sides are strengthening their political and diplomatic ties.
