Kasparov reveals assassination warning: “My life is at risk

Garry Kasparov, a former world chess champion and Russian dissident, has revealed that security authorities in Lithuania and the United States warned him and his longtime associate, Ivan Tyurin, of a serious threat to their lives.

Kasparov, who has lived in exile outside Russia for years, shared the information in a social media post on Tuesday.

According to his statement, both men’s names have been included on a list of people who could be targeted for assassination. He said the notification did not come as a surprise to him, although he experienced it as a shock.

“I was not surprised to learn that my longtime associate and I, as well as the co-founder of the Free Russia Forum, Ivan Tyurin, are on a list of assassination targets. Nevertheless, the news remains shocking,” Kasparov wrote.

He said that security services from Lithuania and the United States had informed them of the danger and recommended that they take preventive measures.

“We were told that our lives were under threat and that we had to take preventive measures. I have taken these measures and will continue to do so,” he said.

Kasparov is known as one of the Kremlin’s and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics. He left Russia years ago and continues to publicly oppose Moscow’s policies.
