Kamberi Proposes Draft Resolution to Verify Crimes in Kosovo: Serbia Continues Denial

Shaip Kamberi, an Albanian member of Serbia’s parliament, has announced that he has submitted a draft resolution calling for the institutional verification of crimes committed during the war in Kosovo.

The initiative is based on the judgments of The Hague Tribunal and aims to launch a discussion within Serbian institutions on the state’s responsibility for war crimes.

In a statement to teve1, Kamberi said that Serbia continues to foster a political culture based on denying these crimes.

“Serbia has consistently cultivated a kind of political culture that denies war crimes, both in Kosovo and in the former Yugoslavia. What is most important to me is the ongoing denial of war crimes in Kosovo,” Kamberi said.

According to him, the draft resolution seeks to challenge the official narrative in Serbia and encourage an institutional debate on responsibility for war crimes.

However, Kamberi does not believe the document will secure the votes of the parliamentary majority.

“The support I have comes from the deputies from Sandžak, who have signed the proposed resolution together with me. Perhaps part of the opposition will also support it when it comes onto the agenda, but I do not expect support from a section of the opposition that calculates around Kosovo,” he stressed.

The initiative was also welcomed by Bekim Blakaj of the Humanitarian Law Fund, who described the idea as very good.

“The idea of the resolution is very good. Crimes committed by Serbian forces, confirmed by The Hague Tribunal and international courts, should be recognised and accepted by Serbia’s parliament,” Blakaj said.

The draft resolution was submitted in May this year, but has so far not been included on the agenda of Serbia’s parliament.
