Kallas opposes easing sanctions on Russian oil: On Monday, EU approves new measures against Moscow

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, has opposed the latest agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to temporarily suspend sanctions on Russian oil.

According to Kallas, any easing of these restrictions gives Moscow additional revenues that could be used to finance the war in Ukraine. In a social media post, she stressed that pressure on Russia should not be reduced now.

The European diplomat wrote that Russian attacks have killed more than 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days. She added that Russia has intensified its hybrid attacks against Europe, targeting both EU member states and NATO allies.

Kallas reiterated that suspending sanctions on Russian oil would provide Moscow with more money for the war and stated that Europe would not ease pressure on Russia.

She also announced that EU foreign ministers will approve the broadest package of sanctions against Russia on Monday.

Kallas’s position follows the agreement between Trump and Putin to supply the US and global markets with hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Russian oil, with the aim of reducing fuel prices.

Fuel prices have risen significantly since the US-Israeli war in Iran began at the end of February this year.
