Janevska defends conditions at the “Stiv Naumov” dormitory: The company carrying out the works is addressing the deficiencies

The renovated “Stiv Naumov” dormitory in Skopje has become a source of confrontation between the government and the opposition. Young Social Democrats claim that students are facing inadequate conditions, while Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska rejects the accusations and invites representatives of SDSM to see the facility for themselves.

Her reaction followed a press conference by Bojan Cvetanoski, deputy head of the Social Democratic Youth of Macedonia. He raised questions about the use of the funds allocated for the renovation, calling it unacceptable that students in a newly renovated dormitory should face dampness, water leaks, and problems with heating and hot water.

In a Facebook post, Janevska described the conditions at “Stiv Naumov” as excellent. She said it was the first of nine student accommodation facilities that would be fully renovated and have their energy efficiency improved during the current government’s term.

Regarding the reported deficiencies, the minister said that isolated problems can arise even after a facility has been renovated. According to her, the dormitory is still under warranty, and the company carrying out the works is working to address the identified problems.

Janevska also said that some of the problems were related to the residents’ irresponsible use of the facilities. She recalled that, from the time the building was put into operation, residents had been urged to use it responsibly.

According to her response, the dormitory’s management had dealt with blocked sewage caused by wet wipes, an alarm activated by food left in a switched-on microwave oven in the communal kitchen, and, in another case, by a lit cigarette in a room. The minister also mentioned a radiator that had been pulled out and vehicles parked on the green areas of the courtyard. She said that all these situations had been resolved.

Janevska also maintained that the food served to students at the dormitory meets the prescribed nutritional standards.
