Iranian military adviser reveals suspended plan: Three bases in Ukraine were targeted for attack

Iran had prepared a response against Ukraine, planning attacks on three bases after an Iranian commercial vessel was struck in the Caspian Sea. The plan was called off after Ukrainian authorities described the incident as a mistake, Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, said.

“We were ready to attack three locations in Ukraine. But after they said it was a mistake, we suspended our response to assess their claim,” Rezaei said in an interview with Iranian state television.

The incident occurred last week, when Tehran accused Kyiv of attacking an Iranian vessel carrying a cargo of iron in the Caspian Sea. One sailor was killed and three others were injured. Ukraine, meanwhile, said the targets of the drone strikes were two Russian vessels carrying military cargo.

Tensions between Iran and Ukraine eased after a phone call between the two countries’ foreign ministers. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his Ukrainian counterpart had assured him that the strike on the Iranian vessel was not deliberate.

Despite this, Rezaei stressed that Iran would seek compensation for the consequences of the attack, even if it turned out to have been accidental.

During the same interview, he said Tehran was focusing solely on negotiations with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz and not on talks with the United States. The Iranian adviser warned that continuing the blockade would have consequences for U.S. forces, while urging Washington to change its approach and fulfill its commitments.
