A statement carried by Iran’s Tasnim news agency said the tankers were targeted and seized because they had failed to comply with orders from Iranian authorities.
The Revolutionary Guard did not disclose the identities of the vessels, the flags under which they were sailing, or any information about their owners. The exact location of the incident and the alleged violations that led to the seizure also remained undisclosed.
The incident follows Tehran’s opposition to the use of the southern maritime corridor near the coast of Oman. Iranian authorities continue to demand compliance with their navigation rules along this strategically important maritime route.
In the same statement, the Revolutionary Guard issued another warning to the United States, stressing that Washington’s “illegal interference and orders” “will not go unanswered by vessels in the region.”
