Iran proposes a seven-day ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz: The decision is now in the hands of the US

Tehran has presented Washington with a “specific” seven-day plan to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while responsibility for the decision now rests with the American side. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the statement yesterday at the United Nations.

“If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and the movement of ships can resume within seven days. The choice now belongs to the United States,” Araghchi said.

According to the Iranian minister, the measures Washington must take do not constitute new demands, as they were set out in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two countries in June.

An Iranian official told Reuters earlier that Tehran does not plan to make concessions regarding its nuclear program, even if the US accepts the proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The plan includes several measures, among them lifting the blockade on Iranian ports.

The official stressed that the strategic waterway would remain closed until the United States “fulfilled all of Iran’s conditions.”

The draft presented by Iran calls for fighting to cease on all fronts, including Lebanon, within a seven-day period. Washington must also lift the blockade on Iran’s ports and the sanctions on oil, as well as unblock Iran’s frozen assets.

The proposal was delivered to the American side at a time when hostilities in the Middle East have escalated. This comes after seven months of war between the US and Iran, while Yemen’s Houthi rebels have carried out a series of missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia.
